Visiting Scholars

Professeur Nicolas Brosse
LERMaB, Faculté des Sciences et Techniques, UHP Nancy 1

Paul Gatenholm has been appointed Professor of Biopolymer Technology at Chalmers University of Technology from November 1, 2000. He was born in 1956. He received his BSc in Organic Chemistry at Stockholm University. He graduated with a PhD in 1985 at the Department of Polymer Technology at Chalmers University of Technology with a thesis on cellulose-polymer composites. After spending a post-doc period at UNSW in Australia, he moved over to directing R&D in the polymer industry. In 1991, he was a visiting scientist at the Bioengineering Center, University of Washington in Seattle. He was appointed ‘docent’ at Chalmers in 1995 and initiated research on bio-based materials. In 1997, he was visiting professor at the US Naval Research Laboratory and he was appointed Adjunct Professor of Biomaterial Engineering at Virginia Tech, USA.

During his visit to our laboratory (2005-2007) we are actively collaborating in several fields including cold plasma modification of cellulosics, nanocellulosic composites, and fiber modification of wood fibers.

Our research studies in biofuels, biomaterials and biochemicals is a national-international partnership. Frequently this involves students from our group visiting other research laboratories to work collaboratively on projects. For example:

  1. Lorraine C. Vander Wielen visited the research laboratories of Professor Paul Gatenholm, Chalmers University; Gothenburg, Sweden in the winter of 2003 to characterize cold plasma modified lignocellulosic fibers. The results of this collaboration were summarized in several publications.
  2. Lorraine C. Vander Wielen visited the research laboratories of Professor Paul Gatenholm, Chalmers University; Gothenburg, Sweden in the winter of 2003 to characterize cold plasma modified lignocellulosic fibers. The results of this collaboration were summarized in several publications.
  3. Mate Nagy visited the research laboratories of Professor George Britovsek at Imperial College London the Fall of 2006. His studies while at ICL were directed at investigating new catalysts for refining biomass.
  4. Lee Goetz visited the research laboratories of Professor K. Oksman’s lab in Luleå University of Technology, Skelleftea/Sweden. Her studies while at LTU were directed at examining the fundamental properties of nanocellulosic composites.
  5. Bassem Hallac visited the research laboratories of Professor Richard Murphy at Imperial College London (ICL) the summer of 2009. His studies while at ICL were directed at investigating the ultrastructure of Buddleja davidii before and after pretreatment.
  6. Tyrone Wells visited the research laboratories of Professor Hans Theliander at Chalmers University of Technology (Gothenburg, Sweden) in 2013-14. His studies while at Chalmers are directed at investigating the structure of lignin from kraft pulping and how it can be tailored for specific product platform technologies.
